Amherst Codified Ordinances (see chapter 191 for Income Tax Ordinance)
City of Amherst income tax returns or requests for an extension to file are due on April 15, 2013.
The tax office is located in the San Spring building at 480 Park Avenue. Normal business hours are Monday through Friday, 8:30 am to 4:30 pm. The office will be open extended hours on the following dates:
Returns can be prepared in the office, free of charge. They can also be prepared using the new fillable PDF. The online tax calculator is now available and is located at the following web address: www.mitstaxonline.com/amherst
The tax calculation tool can be used to calculate most Amherst city tax returns, check estimates or request a filing extension. After the filing deadline, the tax calulator can still be used to calculate returns; however, penalty and interest will not be accessed until the return is filed with the tax office. Any penalty and interest will be billed to you once the tax return is received. Payment can be made online using a credit card or ACH through your checking account. If this tool is used it will still be necessary to submit the tax form and supporting documents to the tax office. Please contact the tax office if you have any questions.
General Income Tax Information
The city of Amherst, Ohio has mandatory income tax filing. The tax rate, in effect since 1991, is 1.5% with a 1% credit given for taxes paid to other cities per Amherst Codified Ordinance 191.16. One percent of the total tax rate is used for general fund expenses. The remaining one-half percent is divided equally between the general fund and the street improvement fund.
In January, tax forms are mailed to every Amherst resident who is on file with our office. While every effort is made to mail a tax form to all taxpayers required to file, it is the taxpayer’s responsibility to obtain a form. The tax forms can be obtained in the tax office any time during business hours or from the Amherst Public Library during the months of February, March and April. They can also be obtained at the links listed below.
Upon request, our office will calculate your individual Amherst city tax forms for you free of charge. Estimated payments are accepted, but are not mandatory. They can be set up at the time of filing, or at any time by informing the tax office.
The city of Amherst will honor federal extensions. If you file an extension, please inform the tax office in writing by the original due date. Failure to request an extension before the original due date will result in a $25.00 late filing penalty. Interest will accrue on any tax due unless estimated payments were made and paid in full.
The income tax office is open Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Please feel free to call our office. We will be glad to answer any questions you may have.
